SMART DOCK SYSTEMS
Smart-Dock technology allows users to access a bicycle from the docking point with a membership card, key fob, or pin-code, following the purchase of a pass at the bike share kiosk or online. With this type of equipment, the bicycle must be returned to one of the many available docking points in the system to communicate the return of the bicycle to the system. The docking points are physically wired and connected to the payment kiosk.

SMART LOCK SYSTEMS
Smart-lock systems localize the technology of bike share even further than Smart- Bike systems. Vendors of this technology have created nearly universal GPS-enabled locks that can be placed on most bikes. These locks can be accessed and tracked via smartphones.
Because of the low-cost of these Smart-Locks and their ability to create networks, they are being hailed as a possible major industry disruptor.

SMART BIKE SYSTEMS
Smart-Bike technology incorporates a permanently attached locking system onto the bicycle. While some of these locking mechanisms allow the Smart-Bike to utilize any type of bicycle rack, companies have developed custom Smart-Bike racks to emulate bike share “Hub Locations” and differentiate the system from regular bike racks. Since each Smart-Bike communicates directly with the server, it doesn’t require a physical connection to a payment kiosk.
